〈 CHARACTER INFO 〉

CHARACTER NAME: Viago

CHARACTER AGE: 379

CANON ORIGIN: What We Do In The Shadows (henceforth WWDITS)

CHRONOLOGY: Post-Film

CLASS: ANTI-HERO since while Viago isn't really evil, he does lack a lot of conventional morality

HOUSING: Random and with roommates! It's going to stress him out a bit to be housed with any non-vampires, but he does enjoy living with others. It'll also be fun for me to have him be challenged to act human and fail pretty miserably ( yet many people will probably suspect "weirdo" before "vampire" ).

BACKGROUND:

Viago is from a universe where every kind of supernatural creature you could ever imagine is valid and present in modern day ( 2015 ) society. Werewolves, zombies, banshees, weregeese, etc. The events of WWDITS itself takes place in Wellington, New Zealand, where the local supernatural creatures form a multitude of secret societies that come together once a year, celebrating one another in the "Unholy Masquerade". The film ( "mockumentary") examines how these creatures might realistically integrate into normal night-to-night life so everything is played pretty tongue-in-cheek, with only some elements of horror and tragedy making it through.

We are never specifically told where Viago comes from in the film, but due to the events we can safely assume he's vaguely German. While described by his flatmate as an "18th century dandy", Viago's age of 379 means either the writers of WWDITS can't do math or he simply adopted that style when it came around.

It is uncertain but heavily implied that Viago was turned by the 8000 year old vampire, Petyr, that is one of the 4 vampire flatmates that he has. It would certainly make sense given this and the fact Deacon, one of the other flatmates, was explicitly stated to be turned by Petyr and was definitely German ( enough so that he was a "Nazi Vampire" until WW2 was over ). It is also stated by a human female character that "if I had a penis I would have been turned ages ago" implying Petyr has a thing for changing dudes into vampires.

Some 80 (~1922) or so years before the events of the film take place, Viago falls in love with a young lady named Katherine. Her family moves away to New Zealand ( probably because of the wars ) and he decides to pack up his life and follow her there. However, his familiar ( a man who he promised immortality for his servitude ) puts the wrong postage on Viago's coffin so it takes him 18 months to actually arrive in New Zealand. By the time he gets there, not only has Katherine fallen in love with another man, she's also married him. Heartbroken, Viago eventually decides it's best to let her go live her life.

At some point, Deacon, Vladislav, and Petyr join Viago in a flatting situation in New Zealand. I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that happened around 1945 since the war is over and Deacon at least could no longer afford to live in Germany due to his war crimes ( the movie shows slides of a ship and Petyr on it when Deacon is talking about fleeing ). Vladislav too was a tyrant who indulged in torture and had fallen on hard times due to a bad break-up and probably needed a change of scenery. Actually it's not going too far out on a limb because here is a picture of them celebrating someone's birthday in 1946.

According to the writers, at some point the vampires ran out of their fortunes they'd accumulated centuries ago and started having to live night-to-night to afford their rent, hypnotizing landlords or selling antiques. They even have to steal some of their clothes from victims. This gets to be an underlying source of tension, along with the fact no one but Viago seems to take a serious interest in keeping their flat clean.

But then, 2015, along comes Nick, the antagonist to our story. Nick is a New Zealander that the gang originally has brought to their flat to eat, probably for the sake of showing off for the documentary crew they gave permission to follow them around at this point. They play with Nick for a while before eventually chasing him out into the night, and are disappointed when Petyr steals the kill for himself instead. Next we see, though, Nick is seen floating outside trying to get into the windows of the flat, a new addition to the 'family' that no one wanted.

But Nick also has a human friend named Stu, to whom the older vampires immediately form an attachment. Everybody loves Stu, so Nick is tolerated ( assuming Stu is also there ). Nick is so enamored with being a vampire, he tells everyone who will listen and shows off his abilities at every chance, despite the older vampires scolding him against doing so. Nick ends up telling a vampire hunter about his existence and thinks nothing of it.

But one morning, the vampires are woken up to screaming in the basement, where Petyr lives. They open it up to find him burning alive. Apparently the vampire hunter had broken in through a window during daylight hours to kill the house and Petyr, while successfully killing the hunter, accidentally caught himself on fire in the sunlight. Vladislav attempts to douse the fire with water but it isn't enough. Deacon attempts charge down and save Petyr, but Viago bodily holds him back and shuts the door, telling him he'll die too if he goes into the sunlight. While the house mourns, Viago does his best to take care of them, especially Deacon.

After a huge fight between Nick and Deacon in the fallout, and dealing with police, the vampires decide to exile Nick from their household on the basis of getting Petyr killed. Shortly after, the Unholy Masquerade comes around. Deacon and Viago try to console Vladislav, who had been hoping to be the guest of honor that year, but found out the honor had actually gone to his arch-nemesis, The Beast. They end up going without him.

Of course, Nick is there. And of course, because he's an idiot, Nick brought Stu along. Everyone loves Stu, but he's still a human in a party full of creatures that would love nothing more than to eat him... In trying to protect Stu, they end up having to run from the Masquerade.

They end up running into the local werewolf pack who are in the process of trying to chain themselves up during the full moon. The vampires, being the shady assholes they are, end up distracting the werewolves too much with their camera crew and taunting, so the whole pack ends up being unbound when they change. While the vampires simply fly off, Stu and one of the cameramen aren't so lucky. Stu is disembowled horribly.

The vampires are very depressed over the loss of Stu. They go into depression. The dishes pile up in Viago's case. He reflects that even though he's dead, his feelings are still very much alive. He tries to take care of his flatmates, notably saving Deacon from a sunlight accident and putting him to bed in a safe place.

Stu actually returns to them a few months, revealed to be a werewolf now. Viago reflects he was worried the werewolves were going to pee on everything but is happy to know they are actually polite and clean.

In the meantime, Viago had confessed his feelings and turned the love of his life, Katherine, at 99, into a vampire. They are now together forever, or at least so it seems.

PERSONALITY:

For a creature of the night and someone who needs to drink blood to live, Viago is a rather chipper fellow! He is easily the most friendly and sensitive vampire of his group, making him the team mom.

Viago's primary interests are keeping his living situation tidy, having fun with his flatmates, and keeping his flatmates from getting into too much trouble. While he mostly likes being a vampire, he does detest the mess that comes with drinking human blood and he believes his victims should be comfortable during their last moments in the world. This means he usually takes them out on dates, feeds them nice things, plays music... "really make a night out of it". One of his victims starts talking about what she wants to do with her future and we can see him immediately regret asking her because it makes him feel a little guilty; not guilty enough, however, to not decide to go in for the kill then and there.

One of his biggest weaknesses is definitely that when push comes to shove, Viago usually submits to the whims of the more dominant personalities of his household. It took him 5 years to work up the nerve to stand up and tell his lazy flatmate, Deacon, to do the dishes. Even then, he tried to tell him as delicately as possible and needed Vladislav there to back him up. While he tries to organize and make everyone do chores in the flat, he usually ends up doing them himself, which he excuses as liking to live in cleanliness rather than admit he's a doormat.

Deacon and Vladislav are also both bloodthirsty, the former being the most quarrelsome, and despite admitting his more kind philosophies about how they should treat humans, Viago allows himself to be peer-pressured into less kind situations. Boyishly he seems to enjoy Deacon's pranks of hypnotizing a human!Nick into thinking spaghetti is worms and that Nick's dick is a snake. He also seems to enjoy chasing the man around the house and terrorizing him, though I think it's more an aspect of being able to be one of the boys with his flatmates than any particular malice on his part. When quarrels happen he tends to freeze up and let them. The only time he really shows any courage is when he's defending people he likes - he backs Deacon up despite knowing he's wrong for picking on the local werewolf pack and even bodily throws himself on Deacon to save his life when Peter is attacked.

Viago is an optimist, even to the point of being a bit naive. He's the first to put anything bad that happens into a positive outlook. Botching an attempt on killing someone cleanly: "Well that didn't go so great... I hit a main artery, so it's a real mess in there. On the upside, I think she had a really good time!" He's very good about understanding when something is nice or not nice behavior, but he does seem to be bad at understanding whats always appropriate. He can tell keeping slaves is an "old world idea" that Vladislav has, yet he needs to be told dressing up as Whoopi Goldberg from Sister Act ( a nun ) and Wesley Snipes as Blade ( a vampiric vampire hunter ) are not good costumes to wear to a party full of vampires.

His flatmates call him fussy and a nag, which is partially true. What he asks from them is to clean up around the house and not be assholes, which does seem reasonable, but he actually very much is fussy and delicate. Viago's delicacy usually means he goes into a bite gently and panics when he bites a main artery in a victim of his, causing him to messily try to drink from the end of a blood firehouse while his clothes are soaked.

He is pretty compassionate for a vampire. Even when what he sees as the love of his life, Katherine, takes another man for her husband, he can't bring himself to kill the man and take his lady love. Seeing that she's happy, he allows her to live her life ( though it doesn't stop his coffin from shaking suspiciously when he takes her picture to it ). He puts the needs of his vampire brethren often before himself. Even when giving Nick his punishment, he still wants to be seen by Nick as in his corner, even if the reality isn't so true.

In the end, Viago is a very kind and caring vampire, minus the part where he's incredibly persnickety and easily peer-pressured into more horrible acts. Since he is a vampire, he can't be a sunspot, but he is a moonbeam.

POWER:

{ Vampire Physiology }

Immortality
Being dead means Viago has looked like a 30-something for almost 400 years now. He can't get sick, but he will get weak and die if he doesn't drink human blood. So not total immortality.

Undead Stamina/Healing
In general, being undead gives Viago the ability to withstand more wounds than a human would, probably because his biology is dead. He does feel pain from these things, however, and if impaled on/with something will need to take it out for the wound to heal. His healing factor is dependent upon how hungry he was before he was injured and whether blood is available after. So worst case scenario, if he was starving and was given a usually mortal wound, and couldn't be fed after, he'd die.

He can also die by being exposed to direct sunlight ( he'd light on fire and have to put himself out or burn alive ), staked in the heart, or by being decapitated. He is sensitive to crucifixes and being touched by silver burns him. Garlic doesn't work on him, though, that one is bullshit.

Flight
Viago can only run as quickly as a human, but he can fly faster than that. Canon evidence suggests he can't really fly faster than your average bat hauling ass.

Shapeshifting
Speaking of bats, Viago's vampire biology allows him to transform into a bat. In his world even the newest vampires can turn into a bat and he's had about 400 years to do it. He may also become mist, though I will say it's only for a few minutes at a time in order to lie low (haha), else he risks losing himself. His clothes do go with him and reappear during this process.

Hypnosis
Generally used as a 'you do not notice anything off about me' power of suggestion. He's not very good at it since it requires a force of will and he's kind of a softie. But he was able to convince two doddering cops that nothing was amiss in a scene where two people were hanging suspended in the air in front of them.

Siring
He can turn someone else into a vampire, but it's a pretty long process and involves him actually controlling whatever bleeding happens. The one time he ever managed to do it was for the love of his life. Usually he just uses the promise of immortality to convince people to do his bidding.

Other Weaknesses
- Having no reflection means Viago can't ever know how fabulous he looks unless someone takes a picture for him or draws him. Also it tends to weird people out.

- If he has even a bite of human food, his body will forcibly eject it by way of a blood fountain.

- Must be invited into any establishment with a closed door.

{ Spot Cleaning }
This power allows Viago to touch dirt or a stain to get rid of it. The tougher the stain, the longer he must touch it for. Technically he could do laundry just by wringing the clothing in question through his hands.

He must touch the uncleanliness with his bare hands for it to work... Yeah, it will have to be pretty important or not too gross. Also, every 1/4 times he activates this power, some creature of the night (bat, raccoons, rats, wolves, etc) will be summoned onto the scene, Snow White style.

FINAL NOTES: The transformation aspect of his powers in particular concerned me, so I left one of my power slots open in case the mods feel like it should be its own thing! He also has some minor teleportation powers in his canon ( just able to blink about 10ft or so ), but I think that might be a bit much to bring to the table.
